The Seattle Seahawks are expected to release defensive tackle Malik McDowell as he has not yet been medically cleared, a source told NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

There is hope that the 2017 second-round pick will be cleared by another team. The 21-year-old never got a chance to start his NFL career as he suffered multiple injuries - including a concussion and facial injuries - in an ATV accident a few weeks before training camp started last July. He spent the 2017 season on the non-football injury list.

If McDowell clears waivers, he'll count for $3.6 million in dead cap money for 2018, but if another club claims him, his contract will be off the books in Seattle.

The Michigan State product was the Seahawks' first selection in last year's draft, going off the board 35th overall.
