Los Angeles Rams standout defensive tackle Aaron Donald missed the start of voluntary offseason workouts Monday.

Donald and the Rams are working on a new contract for the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, and head coach Sean McVay didn't appear to be phased by his absence, telling reports he expected him to hold out.

"We feel good about the dialogue that has existed," McVay said via NFL.com's Nick Shook. "We totally understand some of the other things that are going on with regards to wanting to get that deal, and with respect to Aaron, we feel really good about that dialogue. And this is a voluntary offseason program with where we're at. You know, he's a guy who's going to work hard on his off-time, and that's kind of where we're at. So, we feel good with everything that's going on with that."

It's imperative for the Rams to sign Donald to a long-term deal, even after securing fellow star defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh in free agency.

Donald is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent in 2019 and currently holds a $6.89-million cap hit for the 2018 season.

"I don't think I'd ever use the word crisis. ... We're proactive to finding a solution," McVay said.
