Jets GM unfazed by previous quarterback draft whiffs

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan isn't letting the slow developments of quarterbacks Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg bother him ahead of a draft in which he's already traded up to acquire the No. 3 overall pick.

"It doesn't faze me," Maccagnan said, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN. "It's the college draft. (There are) guys you'll hit on and guys who don't pan out. That's part of the process. We feel pretty confident with this year's group and where we're situated."

Petty was selected 103rd overall in the 2015 draft and has attempted a total of 245 passes while appearing in just 10 games. He's thrown four touchdowns to 10 interceptions. Hackenberg was taken 51st in the 2016 draft and has yet to appear in a regular season game.

Maccagnan has put the Jets in a significantly better situation to find a franchise quarterback this year, landing the No. 3 pick from the Indianapolis Colts last month in exchange for the No. 6 selection, two second-round picks in this year's draft, and another second-rounder in 2019.

The trade is believed to have set the Jets up to take one of Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, and Baker Mayfield. However, Maccagnan hasn't made a strong indication of his preference, with both the Cleveland Browns and New York Giants expected to choose quarterbacks with the first two picks.

"We do think there are some very good quarterback prospects in this class," Maccagnan said. "They all have different strengths and maybe some different areas of concern or weakness. That's one of the reasons why I've been to all these pro days, because there are some real viable guys there that you think may be good additions if they fall to us in the right spot."
