Jets promise to be 'very active' on 1st day of free agency

The New York Jets plan on being major players in free agency and they don't care who knows it.

Just days before free agency is set to begin, general manager Mike Maccagnan revealed he's planning on landing some big fish.

"Obviously we'll be very active on the first day in terms of the higher profile guys," Maccagnan said, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post.

"I think the one thing I've noticed in the NFL this year or in the past years, I should say, is free agency moves very quickly. If you have guys targeted and you have your range how you value them, we'll be very active."

The Jets are tops in the league with roughly $90 million in salary cap space. Free agency won't officially begin until Wednesday, but teams can begin contract negotiations with impending free agents on Monday.

The rebuilding Jets have numerous holes on their roster, including at starting quarterback, running back, and cornerback. However, perhaps encouraged by their surprising 5-11 finish in 2017, it appears the club is looking to accelerate the reconstruction.

"It will be interesting to see which players we can potentially line up first for initial visits," Maccagnan said.

The Jets are expected to be players in the Kirk Cousins sweepstakes and will reportedly pay "whatever it takes" to land his services.

"We may sign a big-ticket guy. We may sign a small-ticket guy. It will be very interesting to see how it plays out," Maccagnan added. "Everybody is well aware we have quite a bit of cap space to work with. There are quite a few players we're interested in."
