The San Francisco 49ers announced they will not pick up the 2018 option on Elvis Dumervil's contract, making him a free agent.

"I want to thank Elvis for everything he contributed to our team last year both on the field and throughout our building," 49ers general manager John Lynch said in a statement. "Not only did he bring a great deal of veteran leadership to our locker room at a time of significant change, but he provided a spark to our defense."

Lynch added the team would not close the door on a potential reunion in the future.

Dumervil signed a two-year, $8-million contract with San Francisco in 2017 which included a team option after the first season.

The veteran pass-rusher accumulated 13 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2017. He currently ranks fourth among active NFL players with 105.5 career sacks.
