The Dallas Cowboys currently have the luxury of carrying the lowest-paid starting quarterback in Dak Prescott, the NFL 2016 Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Per league rules, Prescott cannot earn more money until after the 2018 season, but owner Jerry Jones expects to give his starting signal-caller a lucrative extension when the time is right.

"(Prescott is) going to get his extraordinary contract," Jones said via the Dallas Morning News. "But while we can put the team together and take advantage when he is on this contract right now, we’ve got to be real astute to maximize that advantage."

The quarterback is signed through 2019, and until an extension occurs he will count for less than $1 million against the salary cap.

Dallas will also be looking to extend running back Ezekiel Elliott at some point, though the team will have an extra year to negotiate since he was a first-round pick.

Prescott accumulated 3,324 passing yards and 22 touchdowns in 2017 but threw nine more interceptions than he did during his rookie year.
