Dolphins' Landry: 'Franchise tag is not a good deal for me'

Jarvis Landry is not being shy about his dislike for possibly playing under the franchise tag in 2018.

After the Miami Dolphins receiver was reportedly granted permission to seek a trade, Landry released a 10-minute video Saturday morning detailing why he doesn't want to play under the $16-million tag without any guarantees past 2018.

"The team decides to exercise the franchise tag. I'm considering not playing on it," said Landry. "The franchise tag is not a good deal for me. In my case, I've played four years. Then you get another year of basically not signing me to a long-term deal. In that year anything can happen. Look at guys like Ryan Shazier who may not have an opportunity to play again.

"He's fighting a battle to just walk again. I'm at the point where taking care of my family is the most important thing for me. I put my body on the line for years. I've sacrificed my time and my life to make sure that I have this opportunity."

Landry led the NFL in receptions in 2017, his third straight season with at least 94 catches. He may have been the most coveted receiver if he hit the free-agent market. If Landry cannot secure a trade, he has until July 16 to sign a long-term deal with the Dolphins before facing the decision to play under the tag or sit the season out.
