Report: Premier League expected to delay introduction of VAR

Those campaigning for the use of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) in the Premier League may have to wait until 2019 before England's top flight implements the new officiating system.

Several Premier League clubs have apparently expressed concerns over VAR during trial games, and as such the new technology won't be introduced for the 2018-19 campaign, Richard Conway of BBC Sport reports.

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) is expected to approve the use of VAR ahead of this summer's World Cup in Russia during its AGM later this month.

However, concerns have emerged since the technology's implementation during trial games, such as Tottenham's FA Cup win over Rochdale when a goal was wrongfully disallowed and a converted penalty was overturned.

The lack of experienced officials is a major concern among Premier League clubs, who are calling for referees to get increased VAR in match situations.

"We are monitoring closely the video assistant referee trials being conducted in other competitions," the Premier League said in a statement to BBC Sport.

"The evidence and learning provided by those trials will inform further discussions with our clubs later this season."

Of the top five leagues in Europe, the Premier League is the last to implement VAR.
