Giants GM hints at potentially trading down during draft

New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman provided a window into his team's philosophy ahead of the 2018 NFL Draft on Wednesday.

The Giants hold the No. 2 overall pick after a dismal 3-13 season and Gettleman was hired in December to help steer the organization back in the right direction.

Many have speculated that the Giants will select a quarterback, either with the No. 2 pick, or by trading down in the first round.

Gettleman hinted that the Giants would be willing to make a trade during the draft, depending on which players are available.

"Are we open for business? You know, whatever. Any decision I make is going to be in the best interest of the New York Football Giants. Plain and simple," Gettleman said via ESPN's Jordan Raanan. "So if someone makes me an offer I can't refuse, would I move back? Depends on who is there.

"Again, if there is a guy worthy of being the second pick of the draft and what we're basically saying and answering that question to the affirmative, you're drafting what you think is going to be a Hall of Fame player. So you can't get too cute about that thing."

Eli Manning is the team's incumbent starting quarterback, and though it's been proposed the Giants' eventual 2018 first-round pick will replace him immediately, head coach Pat Shurmur said Manning has several years left under center.

Gettleman has a compelling decision ahead, with his regime inextricably tied to the player they'll eventually end up selecting. For the time being, the Giants are exercising their due diligence in landing a Hall of Fame-caliber player. New York did select Hall of Fame linebacker Lawrence Taylor with the No. 2 pick in 1981, and are hoping history strikes twice this April.
