The New York Jets have informed defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson of his release, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a league source.

The Jets signed Wilkerson to a five-year, $86-million contract in 2016.

New York has now shed marquee defensive linemen Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson in a matter of five months.

It had been reported late in the 2017 season that the team was ready to cut ties with Wilkerson. The move is expected to save $11 million in cap space.
