Blue Jays sign Seung Hwan Oh to 1-year, $1.75-million deal

After Seung Hwan Oh's deal with the Texas Rangers fell through due to a reported physical issue, the right-handed reliever signed a one-year, $1.75-million deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.

The deal also contains a $2.5-million club option for 2019 that can automatically vest based on games pitched.

Outfielder Ezequiel Carrera, who has spent the last three seasons with the Blue Jays, was designated for assignment Monday in a corresponding roster move.

The 35-year-old Oh is coming off of a pair of contrasting seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals. In 2016, Oh earned the closer role and posted a 1.92 ERA and 2.13 FIP over 79 2/3 innings.

Heading into 2017 as the incumbent closer, Oh wound up losing a lot of his save opportunities to a resurgent Trevor Rosenthal while regressing to a 4.10 ERA and 4.44 FIP.

Oh, nicknamed the Final Boss, had a one-year, $2.75-million deal reportedly in place with the Rangers in early February. However, a deal was never announced and it was reported the two sides were no longer in negotiations.

According to Oh's agent, Kim Dong-wook, the Rangers noticed inflammation in the pitcher's throwing elbow. Despite informing Texas it was a pre-existing condition, the Rangers tried to re-negotiate the deal down on three separate occasions, which eventually forced Oh to break off negotiations.
