Even though the particulars were comparable, Eric Hosmer opted for a change of scenery Saturday when he agreed to an eight-year deal worth up to $144 million with the San Diego Padres.

The Kansas City Royals reportedly offered a similar deal worth around $140 million, according to Rustin Dodd of the Kansas City Star.

One thing they didn't include was an opt-out, Dodd reports, which the Padres did after five years.

Royals general manager Dayton Moore said Hosmer accepted the better offer despite offering the largest contract in franchise history. Had Hosmer returned to the fold, the Royals likely would've needed to shed more money.

"I'm responsible for where we are economically as an organization," Moore said. "I made a decision after the 2015 season, knowing full well that our players were going to become free agents."

Additionally, the Royals' offer was reportedly back-loaded while the Padres will pay more in the early years of the contract.
