Volquez lands 2-year minor-league deal with Rangers

Edinson Volquez, the veteran right-hander now seven months removed from Tommy John surgery, will try to resurrect his career the same place it started.

Volquez, who was released by the Miami Marlins earlier this winter, agreed Friday to a two-year minor-league contract with the Texas Rangers, a team spokesperson announced. The deal will allow him to finish his recovery under the club's supervision this year and give him a chance to return to the big leagues in 2019.

If Volquez gets a spot on the active roster in 2019, he'll earn $2 million, a source told Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish.

Signed by the Rangers as an amateur free agent in 2001, Volquez made his MLB debut with Texas four years later, and spent parts of three seasons with the club before being traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Josh Hamilton ahead of the 2008 campaign.

After landing a two-year, $22-million deal with Miami last winter, Volquez made only 17 starts before a torn ulnar collateral ligament ended his season shortly before the All-Star break. In his injury-shortened campaign, however, Volquez authored one of the most memorable performances of 2017, throwing an emotional no-hitter against the Arizona Diamondbacks on June 3 - which would've been the 26th birthday of late Kansas City Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura, his former teammate.

Over parts of 13 seasons in the majors, Volquez, an All-Star in 2008, owns a 4.42 ERA (90 ERA+) and 1.44 WHIP across stints with the Marlins, Royals, Reds, Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres.
