Hype is real: Chloe Kim blew away even our wildest expectations

We've all had that experience where you go to a party that has been hyped to the max only to leave massively disappointed.

Chloe Kim on a snowboard is definitely not that party.

The American star entered PyeongChang 2018 as arguably the most hyped athlete in the village, placing lofty expectations on the 17-year-old ahead of the women's halfpipe event.

Not only did Kim meet those expectations, she blew them away in breathtaking fashion, storming her way to gold with one of the most dominant performances in recent Olympic memory.

Kim wasted no time in showing the world she wasn't just a product pitchwoman extraordinaire, announcing herself with a ridiculous 91.50 score in her first qualification run. That total would have been good enough to win the gold medal, but would somehow end up being her second-worst of the competition.

The viewing public may have been amazed by her opening salvo but Kim seemed unfussed, taking to Twitter between runs to profess her want for some ice cream despite the frigid temperatures on the course.

That's not a typo; the teenage sensation was actually tweeting during the event. Surely there would be old media types questioning her commitment with such behavior, so Kim promptly ended any chance of that chatter with a second qualifying run of 95.50. The next highest competitor wouldn't sniff the 90-point plateau, finishing well back at 87.75.

Next up was the finals, which Kim ensured would be drama-free with an opening run of 93.75. That would be four points better than the silver-medal run by Liu Jiayu of China, and place the gold medal around her neck before she even took to the track one last time. Kim probably knew that already, but she was too busy doing what most teenagers do when they are bored: playing on social media.

Not content to just post on Twitter and coast to the podium, Kim laid down a victory lap for the ages, completing her trademark back-to-back 1080s on the way to an absurd final-run score of 98.25. That made the margin of victory a stunning 8.50 points, which is essentially Usain Bolt winning a 100-meter dash by 40 meters.

The Chloe Kim party featured four 90-plus runs out of five. The rest of the field combined had zero. While all five of her trips down the course were entertaining, they could have called the jam done after her first qualifying score of 91.50.

Kim's story was well-told coming to the Olympics, but perhaps what had shown her talent most was the fact she qualified for Sochi 2014 as a 13-year-old but was unable to go because the IOC demands an athlete be at least 15.

That rule made the world wait four more years to experience Kim on the Olympic stage. Tuesday's performance showed it was definitely worth it.
