Stuck as the PGA Tour's alternate event to the WGC-Match Play, the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship has landed its star attraction.

Former NFL quarterback Tony Romo will be in the field for the event that will run from March 22-25, the Tour announced Wednesday. It will be the first event in which he competes individually against PGA professionals.

This fulfills a prediction by Romo's NFL broadcast partner, Jim Nantz.

The tournament was formerly a Web.com Tour event, but it has been adapted as the PGA Tour's first event in the Dominican Republic. Running alongside the match play, which draws many of the world's top-ranked golfers, Romo is being brought in as a sponsor exemption.

"Outside of my family and football, golf is one of my greatest passions. So, playing and competing in a PGA Tour event is a dream come true. I am grateful to the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship for giving me an incredible opportunity to test my skills against some of the best on Tour," Romo said.

The event carries a purse of $3 million, but Romo will be competing as an amateur with a plus-0.3 handicap.
