Report: Free agents discussing possibility of own training camp

There could be 31 spring training camps opening next month.

More than 100 free agents remain unsigned with less than three weeks before pitchers and catchers report, and a number of players believe they'll be without a contract when camp opens. Because of that, some have reportedly discussed the potential of organizing a free-agent training camp of their own, sources told Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports.

Lorenzo Cain inked the biggest contract of the offseason Thursday - five years, $80 million - but that isn't expected to open the floodgates. Passan adds that teams don't believe a deal is close for fellow top free agents Yu Darvish, Eric Hosmer, Jake Arrieta, and J.D. Martinez, and have begun pivoting to the middle class of players.

Part of the reason for so many remaining free agents is the current landscape of the league. The typical big spenders - the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants - are conscious of remaining under the luxury-tax threshold to reset penalties ahead of next winter, while one-third of the league is essentially tanking and not spending the money earned in revenue-sharing on players.

With limited dollars to be found, free agents are understandably growing frustrated, and that has led to unity among them, causing additional friction between players and teams.
