Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40-175 years in prison for sexual abuse by Judge Rosemarie Aquilina on Wednesday.

Nassar faced a minimum of 25-40 years in jail after pleading guilty in November to sexually abusing seven girls. The sentence he received in Lansing, Mich., on Wednesday for seven counts of criminal sexual conduct will be added onto his 60-year federal sentence for child pornography charges.

"You've done nothing to deserve to walk outside a prison again," Judge Aquilina said, according to The New York Times' Scott Cacciola and Victor Mather. She added, "I just signed your death warrant."

The sentence brings an end to a hearing that made national and international headlines. Over 150 women - including U.S. Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman - publicly delivered impact statements about sexual abuse Nassar committed against girls as young as 6.

"As much as it was my honor and privilege to hear the sister survivors, it is my honor and privilege to sentence you," Judge Aquilina told Nassar, who was a faculty member at Michigan State University from 1997 to 2015.

The NCAA announced Tuesday that it has opened an investigation into Michigan State's handling of the Nassar case.

Nassar also pleaded guilty to another three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct in a different Michigan county in November. He awaits his sentencing hearing for those charges.
