Report: Marlins engaged in active trade discussions about Yelich, Realmuto
With a couple premium pieces still remaining on their roster, the Miami Marlins could deal two of their best chips away, as the club is engaged in "active trade discussions" with multiple teams regarding Christian Yelich and J.T. Realmuto, a source told Jon Morosi of MLB Network.
While a deal is not imminent, both Yelich and Realmuto reportedly expressed their displeasure with the direction of the Marlins under their new ownership group, after the team traded away Giancarlo Stanton, Marcell Ozuna, and Dee Gordon.
The Atlanta Braves are among the teams to have checked in with the Marlins regarding Yelich, Morosi added. Boasting one of the best farm systems in baseball, the Braves currently have seven prospects in the top 100, according to MLB Pipeline.
While Stanton had a long-term and large financial commitment still due, and Ozuna and Gordon were under team control for a shorter time, both Yelich and Realmuto are young and affordable. Not only does that reportedly make the asking price for their services high, it offers little in the way of motivation for the Marlins to trade away players they could potentially build around.
Yelich, the 26-year-old outfielder, is due $58.25 million over the next five seasons and won't be eligible for free agency until after the 2022 season - heading into his age-31 season.
Realmuto, the 27-year-old catcher, is entering his first year of arbitration eligibility this offseason and is projected to earn $4.2 million next year. In 141 games in 2017, Realmuto posted a .278/.332/.451 slash line with 17 home runs and eight stolen bases.
The pair of budding stars are sure to lure multiple suitors for the Marlins, if the club does decide to trade them.
