Report: Nationals, Adams agree to 1-year, $4M deal
The Washington Nationals reportedly added some offensive firepower to their bench Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year, $4-million deal with first baseman Matt Adams, according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network.
Adams, who was non-tendered by the Atlanta Braves earlier this offseason, can also earn up to $500,000 in performance bonuses.
Despite not being offered a contract by the Braves for 2018, Adams enjoyed his most productive season in years last summer. Traded to Atlanta by the St. Louis Cardinals in May, Adams hit .274/.319/.522 (112 wRC+) with 20 homers in 131 games between the two teams, managing his highest WAR total (1.6) since 2014.
With the Nationals, who finished 97-65 and grabbed a second straight division title in 2017, Adams provides a left-handed-hitting complement to first baseman Ryan Zimmerman, and will likely be the first pinch-hitter off the bench most nights. The 29-year-old is especially dangerous against right-handed pitching, hitting .287/.331/.505 in 939 career plate appearances versus righties.
