Brewers, Chacin agree to 2-year, $15.5M deal
Only a few days after bringing back Yovani Gallardo, the Milwaukee Brewers added some more depth to their rotation, as the club signed free-agent right-hander Jhoulys Chacin to a two-year contract worth a reported $15.5 million, the team announced.
Chacin, who turns 30 next month, enjoyed a solid 2017 season with the San Diego Padres, crafting a 3.89 ERA (106 ERA+) and 1.27 WHIP over 32 starts while managing his best strikeout rate (20 percent) since 2010. After injuries sidelined him for most of 2014 and 2015, he has quietly re-established some value over the last two seasons, accruing 4.0 WAR since the start of 2016 - more than Martin Perez, Patrick Corbin, and John Lackey over that span.
Chacin will slide into the middle of a retooled rotation in Milwaukee. With incumbent ace Jimmy Nelson poised to miss a chunk of the 2018 season following September shoulder surgery, the Brewers were expected to be one of the more aggressive teams in the free-agent market for starting pitchers this winter.
