The NFL is considering potential discipline for New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton after he was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct Thursday against the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

Payton ran onto the field late in the fourth quarter, charging toward field judge Joe Larrow, who immediately threw a flag.

After the game, Payton explained he was trying to call a timeout, a request he was felt went ignored the first time.

"I said, 'I've already called the timeout.' I probably said it with a little more oomph or vigor than I was supposed to, but I had enough. I gotta be smarter than that."

The league can fine or suspended Payton if they feel he violated a rule or made physical contact with an official.
