Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson was diagnosed with a fractured fibula that will end his season after leaving Sunday's game against the New Orleans Saints on a cart, head coach Jay Gruden announced after the game.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins also exited Sunday after taking a hard hit from safety Vonn Bell on the play, but quickly returned to the game.

Thompson entered the contest as the Redskins' leading receiver this season and made his mark by scoring on a 16-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter.

The Redskins were already thin at running back after placing Rob Kelley on injured reserve earlier in the week. Rookie Samaje Perine will be expected to carry the load without Thompson or Kelley.
