Travelers Championship named PGA Tour's 'Tournament of the Year'

One week after a mundane U.S. Open, Jordan Spieth brought the fireworks to TPC River Highlands, leading to the Travelers Championship being named PGA Tour "Tournament of the Year."

"We are incredibly honored and humbled to be named 'Tournament of the Year,' which reflects the selfless work by our volunteers and the support of the tour, its players, our sponsors, and fans," said Travelers Championship tournament director Nathan Grube in a statement.

On the first playoff hole with Daniel Berger, Spieth sunk an unlikely bunker shot for birdie on the 18th to win the tournament, which led to an equally memorable celebration with his caddie, Michael Greller.

"For the bunker shot to go in, that was awesome," Spieth told Peter Kostis of CBS. "I mean, I don't know if I'll ever have a moment like that again."

The Travelers earned four "Best of" awards at the tour's Tournament Meetings in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., also collecting "Most Fan-Friendly," "Best Sales" and "Players Choice."

"On behalf of the PGA Tour, I am pleased to congratulate these tournaments for being named the best among their peers on tour," said PGA Tour EVP and chief tournaments and competitions officer Andy Pazder in a statement. "The respective tournament committees worked tirelessly on new and innovative ways of improving the tournament experience and these awards are a testament to those efforts."

This is the first time the Travelers Championship was named "Tournament of the Year."
