Magic: Lakers won't tinker with Lonzo's shot until next summer

The problem seems to get worse each game, but the Los Angeles Lakers are standing behind Lonzo Ball and his unconventional release.

Ball is making just 31.3 percent of his shots from the field, 25 percent from deep, and just 50 percent from the charity stripe with an unusual shot that originates below his chest on his left side before leaving his hands on his right side at eye level. That shot worked just fine in college, but Ball has been largely inconsistent at the pro level.

The Lakers, however, will take a patient approach. They will give Ball at least a season before approaching him with potential tweaks, team president Magic Johnson said on ESPN's "Mike and Mike."

"I think it’s a fine line because what you have to do is first, he’s been shooting that way his whole life. So what we wanted to do is let him play his game. Let him shoot the way he’s been shooting and hopefully they’ll go in," Johnson said.

"And so, we’re not gonna mess with it. We’re gonna let him shoot and play his game. If after the season, and he’s not shooting well, then we’ll sit down with him and say, 'Hey, let’s maybe look at different way or let’s try to improve the way you are shooting.'"

Johnson added that he doesn't want to discourage Ball in any way, and told him to continue firing even if his funky shot isn't dropping.

"We can break it down with him, but we don’t want to mess with his shot. He’s proven that he’s knocked that shot down. And we want to encourage him to keep shooting," Johnson said.

As it stands, Ball has the lowest field-goal percentage and 3-point percentage in the league among qualified shooters.
