Report: All 9 recipients will reject $17.4M qualifying offer
Unlike in years past, no player will accept a qualifying offer this offseason, as Jake Arrieta, Eric Hosmer, Lorenzo Cain, Carlos Santana, Mike Moustakas, Alex Cobb, Lance Lynn, Wade Davis, and Greg Holland will each pursue a multi-year deal in free agency instead, sources told Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
The nine recipients - who are free to negotiate contracts with other teams while considering their $17.4-million qualifying offers - have until Thursday at 5 p.m. ET to make a decision.
Any player to reject a qualifying offer is attached to draft-pick compensation, meaning that any team that signs a qualified free agent will forfeit at least one pick in the 2018 amateur draft (and may have its international signing bonus pool reduced, too).
Coming into this offseason, only five players - Brett Anderson, Colby Rasmus, Matt Wieters, Jeremy Hellickson, and Neil Walker - had accepted a qualifying offer since the system was introduced in 2012.
