The Green Bay Packers released Martellus Bennett on Wednesday due to a torn rotator cuff. The tight end may play through the ailment or could be placed on injured reserve by the New England Patriots, who claimed him off waivers Thursday, sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Green Bay reportedly cut the veteran with the "failure to disclose a medical condition" designation half a season into a three-year, $21-million contract.

New England quickly picked up Bennett, who spent 2016 with the reigning Super Bowl champions and caught a career-high seven touchdowns.

With considerable injuries to their wide receiving corps, the Patriots could do with another capable body in the passing game.
