Patriots trade Garoppolo to 49ers for 2nd-round pick

The New England Patriots have traded quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to the San Francisco 49ers for a 2018 second-round pick, the 49ers announced.

The 49ers are releasing veteran Brian Hoyer in a corresponding move, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Garoppolo will join rookie C.J. Beathard in the 49ers' quarterback room. He's not expected to play Sunday versus the Arizona Cardinals as he gets acclimated to his new team.

Garoppolo was drafted by the Patriots with the last pick of the second round in 2014. He started two games for the team in 2016, winning both contests while throwing for 496 yards and four touchdowns in that span.

San Francisco owned two second-round picks but sent its original to New England, which should be high as the team currently sits with an 0-8 record.

Tom Brady is currently the only active quarterback on the Patriots' roster.
