Newton says he has to protect the football after loss to Eagles

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was his own toughest critic following Thursday's 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Newton threw three interceptions and was nowhere near his best form as the Panthers dropped to 4-2 on the year. The 2015 NFL MVP finished 28-of-52 for 239 yards and a touchdown, rushing for 71 yards and another score on 11 carries.

"Turning the ball over, giving them layups for scores. In order to win a game like that, you have to protect the football better - and I'm talking to myself," Newton said via Max Henson of the Panthers' official website.

Newton threw an interception during the Panthers' penultimate drive, intending to find Kelvin Benjamin with an opportunity to take a fourth-quarter lead, and took responsibility for the turnover.

"We weren't on the same page and it showed."

Newton, who spoke solemnly during the post-game press conference, did try to find a silver lining after Thursday's contest.

"I don't want to sound depressing, but I'm kind of coming off like that. We're in a good position."
