Boston Red Sox team president Dave Dombrowski is meeting with ownership and club executives to decide whether John Farrell returns as manager, team sources confirmed Tuesday, according to Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.

Dombrowski is expected to meet with reporters later in the week, though it remains to be seen if a decision will be made by then.

Farrell's future with the Red Sox has been a hot topic since the club was eliminated from the postseason Monday, the second straight year a Farrell-led team was bounced from the ALDS.

Despite the regular-season success, a series of controversial incidents followed the Red Sox in 2017, none more memorable than an April 21 dust-up with the Baltimore Orioles, when Manny Machado slid hard into Dustin Pedroia, forcing him to leave the game.

The in-game drama prompted a heated discussion between Dombrowski and Farrell that could be heard from the clubhouse, a major-league source said.

Farrell's club option for 2018 was exercised last winter, meaning the Red Sox could decide to ride it out for another season or fire him.

Since returning to the Red Sox in 2013, Farrell has guided the team to a World Series championship, three 90-win seasons, and three division titles.
