Ware on Cowboys' Lawrence: 'I thought I saw a flash of myself'
DeMarcus Ware and Demarcus Lawrence share a given name and, as a result, Lawrence is often compared to Ware, a Dallas Cowboys legend.
However, three games into the 2017 season, Lawrence is making a name for himself. The four-year pro leads the NFL in sacks with 6.5. His three-sack performance against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 3 earned him NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors and clinched the NFC Defensive Player of the Month award.
With that kind of play, Lawrence is conjuring memories of Ware, who wreaked havoc as a Cowboys pass-rusher for nine seasons.
"I thought I saw a flash of myself," Ware said after Lawrence's Week 1 breakout, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.
"He's coming along and you can see how much he has matured. He's maturing to the point where's he's not a DeMarcus Ware lookalike, it's Demarcus Lawrence. He's becoming his own man."
In Ware's fourth season with the Cowboys in 2008, he recorded a career-high 20 sacks, 2.5 short of the single-season record. Lawrence is on pace to shatter that mark in his fourth year.
