Watch: Lions QB calls for audible inspired by old pal Kershaw

Robert Hanashiro / USA TODAY Sports

Matt Stafford and Clayton Kershaw were close friends growing up in Texas, so the Detroit Lions quarterback gave his old pal - who was busy pitching against the Philadelphia Phillies - a shoutout Monday night as his club looked to extend its late lead over the New York Giants.

In the third quarter of the Lions' eventual 24-10 victory at MetLife Stadium, Stafford called for an audible inspired by his childhood friend and current Los Angeles Dodgers ace, who's now vying for his fourth career Cy Young award.

"Alright, give me 'Kershaw' here," Stafford, on first-and-10 from his own 37-yard line, barked at his offense. "'Kershaw!'"

"Did he say Kershaw?" asked an incredulous Jon Gruden.

He sure did, Jon. After all, nobody owns the Giants like Kershaw, who boasts a 1.62 ERA in 39 career starts and one relief appearance against San Francisco.
