Tottenham teases '1st-of-its-kind' stadium capable of hosting NFL games

Tottenham offered a glimpse of its future state-of-the-art stadium Thursday, claiming the team's new home in north London will be unlike any other in the world.

The most striking feature of the 61,500-seat stadium is without a doubt the "world-first dividing retractable pitch" which could potentially allow the venue to host both Premier League and NFL games on the same day.

Tottenham, which entered a 10-year partnership with the NFL in 2015, hired SCX Group to "design, engineer, build, and install" a versatile football pitch capable of splitting into three sections and retracting under the stadium's south stand to reveal a NFL-regulated artificial playing surface underneath.

A statement on Tottenham's website reads: "The fully retractable grass surface will be used for football matches whilst the artificial pitch underneath will be used for NFL matches, music concerts and a range of other events, in order to protect the integrity of both playing surfaces.

"SCX will design, engineer, build and install the innovative real turf football pitch, which will sit in three pitch-long steel trays, weighing more than 3,000 tonnes each. The surface will split into three sections to show each tray before retracting under the South Stand to reveal the artificial playing surface underneath. The process of switching from one surface to another is expected to take approximately 25 minutes.

"Once the grass pitch is returned, the joins are invisible and undetectable allowing for a Premier League quality playing surface every matchday."

The new stadium is set to open next year, and will be ready to host Premier League matches ahead of the 2018-19 season.
