The Tennessee Titans honored former linebacker Tim Shaw and his battle against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (commonly known as ALS) on Monday, naming him one of their six team captains for the upcoming campaign.
Shaw spent six seasons in the NFL, and finished his career with the Titans in 2012 as a special teams captain. He announced in 2014 that he'd been diagnosed with ALS.
"It is real special for Tim to be with us," fellow captain Wesley Woodyard told the Titans' website. "Nobody knows how many days you have on this earth, and him battling ALS, it shows the courage he has to keep going on. It is amazing to have him around and we cherish him."
Shaw has accompanied the team on road trips since his diagnosis and gave a motivational speech during training camp.
Brian Orakpo, Jurrell Casey, Delanie Walker, and Marcus Mariota were also named team captains.
