Cavs, Celtics reach agreement on revised Irving-Thomas swap

The Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics have reached an agreement on a revised version of their initial swap of point guards.

The Cavaliers will receive an additional 2020 second-round pick on top of the initial agreement of Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and a 2018 first-round pick from the Brooklyn Nets while sending Kyrie Irving to Boston. The deal was first reported by Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

The alteration comes just over a week after the initial trade was made official, but four days after it surfaced that the Cavs were looking for extra compensation due to Thomas' ongoing hip injury. It's not known if the deal ever came close to falling through, but Wojnarowski referred to talks between the two teams as becoming a "game of chicken".

Amid concerns the Celtics downplayed the severity of the injury, Thomas himself is on record stating that he may not be ready for the season opener.

The second-round pick the Cavs add comes via the Miami Heat, included in a 2015 trade for Zoran Dragic - brother of Goran - who now plays in Europe.

Chatter in the last few days suggested Cleveland would try and pursue another one of Boston's young forwards such as Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown, but it was perceived to be a non-starter given that the Cavs had reportedly pursued and been rejected on Tatum in initial trade talks for Irving.
