Royals' Duffy apologizes for being a 'distraction' after DUI arrest
Kansas City Royals left-hander Danny Duffy addressed the media Tuesday afternoon after reports arose that the southpaw hurler was arrested Sunday evening on suspicion of driving under the influence.
"Just wanted to say that, for the situation that got out of hand, I apologize for the distraction, especially with where the team's at right now," Duffy told reporters. "Regardless of whether we had been on a run or not, there's never a good time for this situation to come about."
Duffy had reportedly passed out in the driver's seat of his car while in a Burger King drive-thru. Employees called police and Duffy was booked shortly afterward.
The 28-year-old didn't mention the charges specifically, but offered assurances to his fans that he will attempt to be a better role model.
"To every kid out there that looks up to me, that has read a headline, seen something, looks up to me, I'll just continue to do great for this city, I promise you that."
Currently on the disabled list with an elbow impingement, Duffy has been one of the Royals' most consistent performers in 2017. He's posted a 3.78 ERA over 21 starts in the first of a five-year, $65-million contract extension he signed over this past offseason.
He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 19.
