Los Angeles Rams star defensive tackle Aaron Donald is expected to miss the season opener Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts as he continues to hold out for a new contract extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Rams head coach Sean McVay emphasized this week that he wouldn't rule out Donald from Week 1, but it appears Los Angeles will start the year without its best player.

Donald is entering the final year of his rookie contract and the Rams picked up the fifth-year option for 2018. However, the Pro Bowler is looking to be extended now, and the two parties are reportedly "not close" to a new deal.

The 26-year-old is expected to challenge Von Miller as the highest-paid defensive player in the league following two consecutive first-team All-Pro nods.
