Dolphins' Ajayi returns to practice, remains in concussion protocol

Jay Ajayi appears to be closing in on a return to action.

The Miami Dolphins running back returned to the practice field Sunday, but he remains in concussion protocol, according to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald.

Salguero also noted Ajayi was healthy enough to participate in team drills.

Ajayi has been sidelined for two weeks with a concussion and the Dolphins sorely need him to be ready for Week 1. Miami lost Ryan Tannehill to a season-ending knee injury and now Jay Cutler is being tasked with trying to learn the offense in just a few weeks, so Adam Gase and Co. will no doubt be leaning on Ajayi in the early goings.

The 24-year-old was a breakout start last year for the Dolphins, posting nearly 1,300 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.
