Wentz calls Matthews trade 'kind of out of the blue'

Carson Wentz is having mixed emotions about Friday's trade that sent Jordan Matthews from the Philadelphia Eagles to the Buffalo Bills.

The sophomore quarterback spoke about the departure of Matthews following practice Saturday, and expressed both faith in the Eagles organization as well as lamentation of the fact that one of his closest friends on the team will now wear a different jersey, according to Reuben Frank of CSN.

"You know, it's tough. It's one of those things where there's the personal side of things and the football side of things," Wentz admitted. "The football side of things, you've just got to trust what they're doing upstairs. Ultimately, they're the ones that make those decisions and what they think is best for the team, I'm going to be in support of 100 percent.

"But on a personal side, it's tough. This is my first time experiencing something like this with someone who's one of my best friends. You know? And seeing him yesterday, it was tough on him, too. It was kind of out of the blue … It's just kind of tough personally."

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson addressed the move during a press conference Saturday.

"What are you losing? Well, I think you're losing a great person," said Pederson. "He (Matthews) and I had a good relationship. This business is a difficult one. You got to make some tough choices from time to time, (and) obviously we do what's best for the Philadelphia Eagles. We felt that this was a good opportunity for both sides."

Matthews was shipped off to Buffalo along with a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft in exchange for cornerback Ronald Darby, who recorded 69 tackles in 14 games last season for the Bills.
