Joe Mixon was always going to have to earn his way to the top of the Cincinnati Bengals' depth chart.
The Bengals' second-round draft pick, who assaulted a female student in college, will begin his first preseason as the fourth man out of Cincy's backfield. The Bengals released their depth chart on Tuesday and it lists Jeremy Hill as the No. 1 back, Giovani Bernard behind him, and Mixon as part of a collection on the third team.

The players' positions on the chart should be taken with a grain of salt, however, as Mixon will be eased into his first action as a pro and Cedric Peerman was placed on the non-football injury list before camp.
Mixon is also listed as the second kickoff returner. He fielded 21 kickoffs his last year at Oklahoma and took one to the house.
