Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton won't play in the team's preseason opener Wednesday, but is expected to suit up at some point during the preseason, head coach Ron Rivera announced Tuesday.
The six-year pro, who's still recovering from offseason shoulder surgery, was seen throwing to receivers at practice Tuesday, but the Panthers are taking a cautious approach with the 2015 NFL MVP.

Newton underwent surgery in March to repair a partially torn rotator cuff.
