Former Florida quarterback and All-American John Reaves was found dead in his home in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday by a family member, the school announced Wednesday, citing the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner.

He was 67.

The cause of death is not immediately known, but Reaves had been "dealing with health issues for years," according to the school's statement, and had known struggles with drugs and alcohol during his professional career.

Florida athletics ambassador Steve Spurrier offered his condolences to Reaves' family in a statement released by the university. Along with both being star quarterbacks for the Gators, Spurrier hired Reaves to coach tight ends for the team in 1990.

"All of us Gators were sad to hear about the passing of John Reaves," Spurrier said. "John was one of the all-time best quarterbacks to play here. That '69 Gators team - with John and Carlos Alvarez and Tommy Durrance - that came within one game of winning our first SEC championship was one of the really special teams in the history of our school. … It's sad to see that John has passed on, but we'll celebrate his life down there in Tampa with so many good friends and Gators. His memory will always be with us."

Before transitioning to the NFL, Reaves left Florida as the all-time NCAA career passing leader with 7,581 yards and the SEC record-holder for touchdown passes with 54, according to The Tampa Bay Times.

He went on to have a professional career that spanned from 1972-87, spent with the Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati Bengals, Minnesota Vikings, Houston Oilers, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the NFL, and the Tampa Bay Bandits of the USFL.
