Gates will attend LT's Hall of Fame ceremony, Rivers won't

The Los Angeles Chargers will be allowing at least one player to attend LaDainian Tomlinson's Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Although Philip Rivers is remaining with the team over the weekend, veteran tight end Antonio Gates will be excused to support his former teammate, head coach Anthony Lynn confirmed Tuesday, according to Dan Woike of The Los Angeles Times.

The Chargers created a bit of a stir Monday when it was reported that the club wasn't letting either player miss a training camp practice to attend.

Lynn later claimed that no such direction was issued by the team, and Gates planning to make the trip at least somewhat supports his denial, but Rivers missing out is still notable.

Rivers had taken over as the starting quarterback for each of Tomlinson's final four seasons in San Diego, the first of which being a 2006 campaign that remains among the best a running back has ever put together.

Taking 348 carries that season, Tomlinson racked up 1,815 rushing yards and an NFL-record 28 rushing touchdowns. He also added 56 receptions for 508 yards and another three scores out of the backfield.
