Cowboys cut Whitehead despite claim he wasn't in state during alleged shoplifting

The Dallas Cowboys announced the release of Lucky Whitehead on Monday despite his agent, Dave Rich, claiming the wide receiver wasn't in Virginia during the time of the alleged incident which led to the issuance of an arrest warrant, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The warrant was issued after Whitehead failed to appear in court July 6 on a charge of shoplifting. The 25-year-old was allegedly busted for shoplifting under $200 on June 22 around 1:30 a.m., but Rich says the receiver's flight didn't arrive in Washington D.C. until 11.30 a.m. later that day.

Rich said Whitehead didn't appear in court because he never received the citation and summons. The agent added he has a copy of the ticket as proof and told the Cowboys this information. "It's just unfortunate for the kid," Rich said.

"I didn't even know about that. I don't know what's going on," Whitehead said Monday when asked about the incident at Cowboys camp.

Whitehead was likely a long shot to make the roster, but it's a curious decision by the Cowboys to cut ties before getting a clearer picture on his legal situation.
