Former NFL MVP O.J. Simpson will come out of prison richer than when he entered.

Simpson, who was granted parole Thursday after serving almost nine years in jail on robbery charges, could have made just over $600,000 while in the Lovelock Correctional Center in Nevada, ESPN's Darren Rovell reports. The money comes from his NFL pension. While he owes roughly $40 million to the families of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald L. Goldman via a civil suit, his pension income is protected by state law.

There's some uncertainty about Simpson's earnings because it's not clear when he started collecting his pension. He'd have made $423,570 if he started at age 55, according to Rovell, but if Simpson waited until age 65, the pension formula would have paid him $602,205.

Simpson won't be released until October at the earliest.
