Indians' Carrasco tosses MLB's 5th immaculate inning of season

Aaron Doster / USA TODAY Sports

Carlos Carrasco carved through the Detroit Tigers with expert precision in the top of the fifth inning of Friday night's contest. He struck out Nicholas Castellanos, Mikie Mahtook, and Jose Iglesias on nine total pitches, otherwise known as an immaculate inning.

The Cleveland Indians ace is the fifth pitcher in 2017 to accomplish the milestone. This is quite the surge, as Juan Nicasio was the only pitcher to toss an immaculate inning in 2016.

Overall, Carrasco recorded the 86th immaculate inning in MLB history, according to Baseball Almanac, and only the 31st American League pitcher.

He joins Justin Masterson as the only other Indians pitcher to achieve this level of temporary perfection. Masterson took down Boston Red Sox batters Jonny Gomes, Grady Sizemore, and Stephen Drew on nine pitches in a June, 2014 contest.
