Billups withdraws from consideration for Cavs' president job

The new president of basketball operations for the Cleveland Cavaliers will not be Chauncey Billups.

The former NBA champion and current ESPN analyst has withdrawn his name from consideration for the job, Billups told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

"I have great respect for Dan Gilbert and the Cleveland Cavaliers, and I greatly appreciate the discussions we had regarding their organization," said Billups. "As I have conveyed before, ultimately I would like to lead a team's basketball operation and be a part of a successful franchise. But presently, the timing just isn't right to delve into that role in Cleveland. In the meantime, I will continue to focus on broadcasting and my other business endeavors."

Playing a part in his final decision were staffing concerns and money disparity, a source told ESPN's Jeff Goodman. He's earning more on television than the $2 million-to-$3 million annually he would have received in the Cleveland job, USA Today's Jeff Zillgitt and Cleveland.com's Joe Vardon report.

The organization had previously offered a reported five-year contract to Billups to take over their front office, although negotiations were recently said to be at a standstill after he had seemingly made a counteroffer.

Gilbert announced late last month that the Cavaliers and general manager David Griffin had agreed to part ways. Had Billups been named president, his first task would have been to hire a new GM to replace Griffin.

With free agency now officially underway, assistant general manager Koby Altman has headed a group in charge of handling personnel moves and signings.

Billups - whose had no experience in a front office - was a five-time All-Star during his 17-year playing career. He recently made his debut in the BIG3 league, suiting up for the Killer 3s and dropping 15 points on 4-of-11 shooting.
