Report: Liverpool close to signing Salah for potential club-record fee

Liverpool is willing to sign Roma's Mohamed Salah for a joint-club record £35 million after submitting an improved bid for the 24-year-old, according to the Guardian's Sachin Nakrani.

A £28-million offer was reportedly rejected by the Giallorossi a couple of days ago, but an agreement is now believed to be near.

Salah, who is apparently keen on moving to Anfield, would double his wages at £90,000 a week as a member of the Reds, Nakrani added.

The BBC's Phil McNulty suggested Roma would part ways with the Egypt international if Liverpool proposed somewhere between £35 million and £40 million for the speedy winger.

It now appears as though that demand has been met. With add-ons, The Telegraph's Chris Bascombe said the deal for Salah could even "eclipse" the club's 2011 acquisition of striker Andy Carroll for £35 million.

Salah would represent Liverpool's second signing ahead of the 2017 summer transfer market, with Dominic Solanke set to join the club once his contract with Chelsea expires on June 30.

Liverpool had been interested in Salah before he joined Chelsea in 2014. Manager Jurgen Klopp pushed for the move in order to add the player's pace and goal-scoring ability to an already-mobile front line.

Although the left-footed Salah has often played in the same right-wing role as Sadio Mane, he could find space as a centre-forward.

Roma could also use the cash to meet UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations.

Salah scored 15 goals and added another 11 assists over the 2016-17 Serie A season - the most prolific campaign of his career.
