Nick Fairley's absence from New Orleans Saints OTAs appears to be the result of a serious medical condition.

The veteran defensive tackle has a heart issue that could put his NFL career in jeopardy, Jennifer Hale of Fox Sports reports.

Providing what can perhaps be considered reason for optimism, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport notes that Fairley's condition was first uncovered in his pre-draft physical. He went on to play seven years with the issue before a doctor sought tests in a recent meeting.

General manager Mickey Loomis confirmed Saturday to The Associated Press that Fairley is tending to a medical matter, but he declined to comment on the reports of a heart issue.

Fairley, a former first-round pick of the Detroit Lions, enjoyed the most productive season of his career after landing with the Saints as a free agent in 2016.

Starting all 16 games, he finished the year with an impressive 6.5 sacks and 43 tackles.

The breakout season (and subsequent payday) had Fairley in line to return as a key starter alongside 2016 first-rounder Sheldon Rankins for the foreseeable future.
