Report: Marlins could trade Yelich, Ozuna should losing continue
The Miami Marlins could be major sellers at the non-waiver trade deadline should they continue to sit near the National League East basement come July.
Having not reached the playoffs since 2003, armed with a dismal farm system, on the verge of being sold to new ownership, and currently sitting eight games under .500, the Marlins will reportedly be "wide open" at the deadline if they fail to bounce back, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
Rosenthal believes the Marlins would be open to listening to offers for everyone, including young stars Christian Yelich, J.T. Realmuto, and Marcell Ozuna.
2017 STATS
PLAYER | GP | 2B | HR | RBI | AVG/OBP/SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Yelich | 51 | 7 | 7 | 25 | .265/.347/.408 |
Realmuto | 46 | 7 | 4 | 20 | .300/.367/.435 |
Ozuna | 53 | 8 | 14 | 39 | .319/.383/.564 |
The trio represent the most talented players on the roster, and all are under team control through at least the next two seasons. While they're pillars on the team, they also would garner the greatest return. If the Marlins don't believe they'll be able to compete for a playoff spot in the next few seasons, they could help give a depleted minor-league system that's devoid of future stars a major boost by trading their present core.
Rosenthal added that shedding Giancarlo Stanton's mammoth contract - $295 million over the next 10 years - would likely be destined for the offseason if the Marlins are able to find a taker.
