Packers' Montgomery adjusting to running back, keeping receiver number

Ty Montgomery is getting his first offseason reps in as a running back and he's enjoying the adjustment.

Drafted as a receiver in 2015, the Green Bay Packers asked him to move to running back last season when the team's depth at the position took a major hit. Montgomery finished the year as the starting back and racked up 457 yards at a 5.9 yards-per-carry average.

"I was running a lot on instincts," Montgomery said to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com. "I knew where I was supposed to be going, but it was instinct."

Montgomery, the favorite to be the team's starting back in 2017, is gaining more familiar with the role during OTAs.

"Now, I know techniques. I know rotations and linebacker positions, and fronts and understanding gap rules and what the defense is supposed to be doing," he said. "Now when I get out there, I know my reads and my aiming points and I can just add that to my instincts. I'm excited to do that."

Though he made the transition to running back, Montgomery will be keeping one receiver feature: his number. Though he was eligible to swap out his No. 88 for a more traditional number for a runner, he's also allowed to keep the receiver digits because he played a full season in it.
